Insurance and Deposits
Basic rental includes third-party cover and usually a collision damage waiver with a substantial excess. The rental desk will offer to reduce that excess for a daily fee — this is where most of the profit sits, and where most disputes start.
Two alternatives are worth knowing about: standalone car hire excess insurance bought before you travel is normally far cheaper than the desk product, and some credit cards include cover. If you use either, expect the rental company still to block the full deposit on your card — you claim back afterwards.
Check the car before you leave
Photograph every panel, the wheels, the windscreen and the interior before driving off, with the timestamp on. Note existing scratches on the handover form and have it signed. Check the fuel level matches the policy, and confirm whether it is full-to-full (usual and fairest) or something else.
Driving Around Dalaman
Turkey drives on the right. Main roads along the coast are in good condition and well signposted; the D400 links Dalaman with Fethiye, Kalkan and Kaş, and it is a genuinely scenic drive.
The hill road up to Hisarönü and down to Ölüdeniz is steep with tight bends — take it slowly, especially in a fully loaded car, and use a low gear on the descent rather than riding the brakes.
Speed limits are enforced by camera; fines follow the rental company and are passed on with an administration fee. Parking in Fethiye centre, Ölüdeniz and Kalkan is genuinely difficult in July and August — if your hotel does not have parking, factor that in before deciding to hire.
Petrol stations are plentiful on the main roads and most are attended. Keep some cash for smaller rural stations.
