When to Visit
Dalaman has a Mediterranean climate: hot dry summers and mild wet winters. May, June, September and early October are the sweet spot — warm enough for the sea, comfortable enough to walk around ancient sites and hike stretches of the Lycian Way.
July and August regularly exceed 35 °C inland, and Dalaman valley traps heat. The sea is at its warmest (27–28 °C), but midday sightseeing is hard work and the resorts are at their busiest.
November to March is genuinely wet — Dalaman receives more winter rainfall than most of the Turkish coast — and almost all UK flights stop. The landscape is green and prices are low, but many resort businesses close.
How Weather Affects Flights at Dalaman
Contrary to a common assumption, ordinary summer heat and strong wind rarely cause delays at Dalaman. The two conditions that genuinely affect operations are low visibility and a low cloud base, which force instrument approaches and increase spacing between aircraft, and thunderstorms, which can close the airspace briefly and cause aircraft to hold or divert.
Strong crosswinds matter when they exceed an aircraft type’s demonstrated limit — for the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 families that operate almost all Dalaman traffic, that is a high threshold and rarely reached here. A tailwind on one runway direction is not a delay cause at all: the airport simply operates in the opposite direction.
